What is Mars?

Mars is a planet fourth in order from the Sun. It is a cold desert world also known as the red planet. It has 2 moons, Phobos and Deimos. It also neighbors the planets Earth and Jupiter. Mars is half the size of Earth. One day on Mars comprises 24.6 Earth hours and a year comprises of 687 Earth days. Mars has a very slim layer of atmosphere. It consists of Carbon dioxide, Nitrogen, and Argon. 

With all this many people think that is it possible to colonize mars? or it is just a dream. Just like Earth, Mars has seasons, weather, canyons, and ice caps. Scientists have also found traces of floods but now unlike Earth majority of the water is in the form of icy dirt and thin clouds. Scientists have also found traces of salty water in Martian Hills.

Why Does Elon Musk Want to go to Mars?

The Internet is full of theories and predictions regarding what Elon Musk thinks and Why he wants to go to Mars. Though we will see a brief about 3 reasons why he wants to go to Mars. To know more continue reading:

Many scientists, astrologists, and philanthropists have already thought of having another home planet but Elon Musk is the only one who has decided to turn this thought into reality. Earlier Stephen Hawking, Buzz Aldrin, Elon Musk, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, and Bill Nye are a few of the people who have dedicated their lives and knowledge to space exploration.

Elon Musk who is one of them has also started planning for traveling and sustaining life on Mars. Regardless of sustaining life, there are also many other reasons why Elon Musk wants to go to Mars which includes:

  • Exploration and Discovery

Since the stone age, Humans have developed, discovered, and invented many useful things and will continue to go on. Exploration and Search for new elements and objects is also a reason why Elon Musk wants to go to Mars. 

Maybe the discovery of new items or things brings a revolution in our current science and technology.

We know as time flows all non-renewable sources are going to be replenished. The search and exploration for new fuel mines may help us sustain another 1000 years or more.

Mining in space may lead to the evolution and adaptation of our current technologies and techniques.

  • Tourism and Investment Opportunity

Since the day humans stepped foot on the Moon a lot of companies have planned to invest and start space exploration. People are also excited and demanding for the same but we may see this opportunity in a few years.

A new construction company Orbital Assembly Corporation has already set its plan to build the world’s first luxury space hotel. The hotel is planned to launch in the year 2027 and could accommodate 112 crew members and 280 accommodates.

The hotel is named “Voyager Station”. John Blincow who is the founder of OAC has also said “We can’t wait to show people the era of space-traveling when it’s around the corner”.

Blincow and his team are also hoping to partner with other visionaries like Richard Branson and Elon Musk. Blincow also said “We cannot call [Musk’s] SpaceX our partner, but in the future, we look forward to working with them,”

Can We Colonise Mars?

When life started emerging on Earth around 3.5- 4 billion years ago Mars also was home to water lakes, rivers, and many organic molecules and also had its magnetic field to guard against radiation.  

However, it is estimated that around 3-4 billion years ago Mars lost its magnetic field which led to thinning of its atmosphere. The Mars we see today is the result of thinning of the atmosphere which led the solar radiations to reach the surface of Mars stripping away the ecosystem and water.

Is It Reversible?

Most of the atmosphere and water have already been lost from the Martian surface. This process has turned it into a red cold desert, hence with an atmospheric pressure of 0.6% of Earth’s it is not possible to get liquid water there as the water will quickly evaporate or freeze.

There are various ways to look at it. The red planet can be made more hospitable to life if we can warm it up enough to sustain surface liquid water. Elon Musk has suggested as an example that we can warm it up by exploding nuclear bombs at its polar caps, he says the radiation won’t be an issue as the explosion will take place in space over the poles.

These explosions will lead to the melting of Carbon di Oxide which will further lead to the Greenhouse effect. The Greenhouse Effect will help to melt the ice making the planet warmer and the atmosphere denser.

However, scientists have estimated that this will lead to a sudden rise in water level and submerge the planet in a few meters of water but it won’t last for long as the atmosphere will lead to evaporation of water.

The other way of doing this will be by putting slim layers of Silica aerogel on the surface of Mars. The new study shows that the insulating aerogel can warm the ground enough to melt the ice and would also block harmful radiations coming from the sun which can lead to various diseases like Cancer, Cataract, etc.

So Can We Breathe on Mars?

Well, the answer to this is quite simple, we can’t. The atmosphere mainly consists of Carbon di Oxide however scientists are trying to find a way to convert the CO2 into Oxygen which can help humans to generate O2 for their habitat, but doing this to the entire planet won’t be feasible.

 

What Kind of Dangers We Can Face?

We are still unaware of the other living beings and their behavior present in this universe. However, that is not the only concern even if somehow we manage to turn the atmosphere suitable for us, the planet is prone to various storms.

These storms can be of some 1000nds of diameter bearing 25-30 degrees with a visibility range of 0. The longest one has ever been in space was for around 430 days which is less than half of a year on Mars. 

Is There Any Other Planet to Sustain Life?

Scientists found a planet also known as Earth 2.0 or Kepler-452B. It is an Earth-like planet located in the constellation of Cygnus, orbiting in an habitant zone around a star. It is the only planet found by Kepler, however, it is about 1,403 light-years far from Earth.

As a comparison of 1,403 light-years, The Milkyway Galaxy is about 100000 Light years far from Earth. This may look comparatively small but even so, it means that it would take us 1,403 Earth years to reach Earth 2.0 if we travel with the speed of light.
